Please Tweet to Nominate: Kavin is in the Running for a Shorty Award in Science!

Hi readers. Just a quick, shameless self-promo. If you read my work here, at Genetic Literacy Project, and at Skepchick, you’ll know that I’m passionate about science advocacy. I not only write and blog about science, but am active on Twitter and Facebook, engaging followers, answering questions, and providing accurate resources in a fun, tactful, sometimes snarky manner. I love interacting with my followers and “fans” (which still sounds weird to me, but apparently I have them.) Themes that resonate in my work include:

  • The potential of biotech to improve the world, both in terms of precision medicine and agriculture
  • Pro-GMO sentiment
  • The importance of scientific literacy
  • Evidence/science-based medicine
  • Refuting naturopathic propaganda
  • Aversion to unsubstantiated, unscientific fear-mongering and quackery
  • Combating hindrance of scientific and technological progress, represented largely by people and groups like the Food Babe, Modern Alternative Mama, March Against Monsanto, Natural News, and Moms Across America.
  • Skepticism
  • Feminism

I wasn’t aware until a couple days ago that I was in the running to move to the finals round for a Shorty Award in Science. If you aren’t familiar with the Shorty Awards, here is some info from their website:

“The Shorty Awards honor the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing content on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, and the rest of the social web…The awards for individuals are submitted by tweet nominations. Each year, the Shorty Awards receives millions of tweet nominations from fans supporting their favorite social media stars.”

I’ve moved up to fourth most nominations. If I can make my way to number three, I will move on to the finals. I think I might be able to do it with your help. It only takes a couple minutes. If you appreciate how I use social media to spread science-based information, log in to your Twitter account, click http://shortyawards.com/ksenapathy, fill out the reason why you’re nominating me, and click “tweet your nomination.” Thanks so much to all those who have already nominated, it means a lot to me. I spend my free time and energy on science advocacy, so it feels nice to be recognized, and I would be thrilled just to move on to the finals!

I will leave you with this snippet from my Shorty “interview.” Read the rest here.

Interview questions and answers

Note:  The Shorty Awards website has been experiencing technical issues. I’ve been informed that all the nominations do count although the numbers aren’t updating for now.

  1. I tried to nominate you, but I’m not sure if it worked. It wanted me to give permission to an app to access my account, and I wasn’t sure what that meannt, so I refused that part.

    1. Thank you! I don’t think it works unless you do it through the site (and the “permission” is only asking for the tweet to go through the site so it can be tracked, it doesn’t do anything else.) So I don’t think it works unless you give it permission, but either way I’m flattered and appreciate your gesture!
