Weekend Reads: Dangerous Toys, Parenting Cliches, etc

Well hello hello! How’s everyone doing this weekend?  Things are good here, my little one started pre-school last week and that is just bizarre to me. Time kinda whooshed by on that one. Anyway, what are we looking for today?

If you’re looking for….some toys:

Maybe don’t try these: 10 dangerous toys from years past, and the commercials that marketed them. (from Mary)

If you’re looking for….parenting cliches:

This mom shares the one she hates. What’s your least fave?

If you’re looking for….the other side of the story:

A few years ago Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote about trying to have it all. Now her husband speaks out, drawing attention from a different angle. Whatever you think of their philosophy/ideas/set up, I think it’s a net good when we ask more male voices to join in the work/life balance conversation.  Otherwise it leaves the impression that balance is just a “woman problem”.

If you’re looking for….parenting and politics:

Specifically migration and parenting, and all the politics surrounding it. One of those moments where I realize how privileged I am.

If you’re looking for….how you spend your time:

The new American Time Use Survey is out, and includes some interesting tidbits on how parents spend their time.

If you’re looking for….military moms breastfeeding photos:

Look here. I had no idea the US Army did not specifically protect breastfeeding mothers.

If you’re looking for….discipline tips from a teacher:

These look pretty good.

  1. Haha, can you believe how dangerous those toys are?? My fav was probably Sixfinger because it’s so dangerous and so gimmicky at the same time. Or how about that toy where you basically just give yourself a head injury?

That link about the mom who wished people would stop telling her to “soak up” all of the precious baby moments (like having to get up in the night to comfort your kid) reminded me of the book All Joy and No Fun. There is just this constant need to fully experience every single goddamn moment with your kids and it’s exhausting. I’m glad to see her call out others about this.

I really liked that advice article on discipline tricks. I have so many websites with hacks like these that I need to bookmark in my brain, haha.
